Find the right foundation shade

Shopping for foundation can be hard. So here's a few tips on how to make it super easy for you to find the perfect match!

Nr.1 - Where to buy?
When shopping for a new foundation you should get acquainted with the product, therefore online shopping is a big no! Look for stores that have testers, or small containers in which you can pour a little and try it out at home with natural lighting. However most countries (like Portugal) do not have the containers sistem. So here's what you should do:

Nr.2 - How to try it out?
You should wear a shirt that shows your neckline the best, the reason for this is that most people have different coloration on the face and hands (mostly due to sun exposure) so you want to compare and see how well the foundation blends with your overall shade.
Do a couple of swatches on your jawline and walk out of the store - I know it sounds silly but the artificial lighting can sometimes affect your color perception - walk around for a few minutes and then look in the mirror (under natural lighting if possible). See which one disappeared onto your skin, if it changed color when oxidized, and if it matches your neck/chest color.

Nr.3 - How to: shade and undertone.
In the previous step you found your shade, but do you know your undertone?
The undertone is a color variation, much like a subtle shade that lies beneath your skin. There are warm, neutral and cold undertones - some people also consider yellow and olive undertones.
Finding your undertone can be trickier than finding your shade, but let's try and keep it simple:
Look at these 3 foundation colors, can you tell which one is warm/neutral/cold?

No? Take a look at the chromatic wheel.

Colors that gravitate towards the blue tones are cold, colors that gravitate towards the orange/red tones are warm, and the ones around the orange/slight yellow tones are neutral. If you keep going down the wheel you'll get the yellow and olive undertones.

So which one is yours? Here's a trick: look at the veins on your wrists and eyelids, if they're purple/blueish you have a cold undertone, if they're green/olive you have a warm undertone, if you can't quite figure it out or you have a mixture of both then you're either neutral or one of the yellow/olive undertones.

Note: Having a yellow undertone does not necessarily mean you're warm. Asians for example, since they do not have the typical caucasian/rosy complexion but are sometimes very light skinned, it's hard to find an undertone trough western patterns. So take a look at the chromatic wheel and let's consider yellow our neutral color for now: yellows that gravitate towards the orange are warm, and yellows that gravitate towards the green are cold.

So take your time experimenting and comparing your complexion with your friends. You'll start noticing different people's undertones almost right away :)

Good luck!
